World’s Tallest Lego Tower

lego2 Thousands of children and families helped celebrate Lego’s 50th year by building a 100ft tower made entirely of the plastic blocks at Legoland Windsor (UK). Each 20cm (roughly 8 inches) section was assembled on the ground and lifted into place with a crane. The tower took 4 days to build and is made up of over 500,000 Lego bricks.

How long the record will last is anyone’s guess. The previous record set just last year by a team from Toronto was 96ft using 464,000 bricks, which in turn edged out an earlier 94ft effort at Legoland California.

Mini-Moscow

Moscow

In the photo at left, what appears to be an aerial shot of a city is actually a precise model of the entire city of Moscow, Russia.  The 12 x 12 meter, 1:500 scale model is stored in the Moscow city hall.  The detail is amazing, and even more amazing is that the model is kept up-to-date.  If a new building appears in real life, it is immediately recreated in the model.

22nd Century San Francisco

22nd Century San Francisco

What will San Francisco look like a century from now?  The History Channel sponsored a “City of the Future” contest for architects to share their vision of Utopian cities in the year 2108.

The winner for the San Francisco version was IwamotoScott Architecture, which envisions the city using “Geothermal Mushroom” structures to extract heat and water from deep in the earth, and “Fog Flowers” to extract moisture from the city’s famous fog to grow algae, which would then be converted to hydrogen fuel to power hover cars.

I’m assuming those floating buildings on the hillside are earthquake-proof!

Flying Saucer House for sale

Flying Saucer House

For Sale: A mountainside home in Tennessee with three bedrooms, two baths, and an entrance staircase that retracts with the push of a button.  Perfect for space enthusiasts and would-be astronauts.  Must be tolerant of sightseers and gawkers.

The home “landed” on a twisty road leading to Chattanooga’s Signal Mountain in 1970, about the time of the moon landings.  The home’s unusual shape — sort of like two white Frisbees pasted together — poses some interior decorating challenges.  The curve of the exterior creates a sloping ceiling and short side walls, but there’s also a striking curved bar and custom bathtub.

The house was posted on e-Bay and already has a $100,000 bid.  The late Curtis W. King and his family built the unusual home because “they liked to do unusual things”.

World’s Craziest Fences

Ski Fence

They say “good fences make good neighbors,” so would a crazy fence drive your neighbors crazy?

The yard behind this fence obviously belongs to a skier.  Given how expensive skis are, there must be a mansion sitting behind that fence!

Unusual Hotels Of The World

tree_hotel Perusing this site we found hotels in caves, igloos, trains, and one even inside of a giant dog.

While there are several interesting and certainly creative hotels and locations for hotels, without a doubt our favorite is the Woodpecker Hotel in Vasteras, Sweden which is located “13 meters up the biggest oak tree in the Wasapark in the center of Vasteras”.

In addition to browsing by categories the site also features an interactive map that allows you to find hotels by location.

Tunnel Under Niagra Falls

Tunnel under Niagra Falls

Imagine a tunnel more than ten stories underground, a hundred years old, brick-lined, dripping wet and completely inaccessible, except by a rope that drops through a narrow slit in its ceiling thirty feet above the tunnel floor.

Now imagine this tunnel snakes its way under Niagara Falls and 600,000 gallons of rushing water per second, emerging at the base of the falls behind the torrent of water smashing on the rocks below.
